Storm the Harbor
CFS did an awesome job this weekend at CF Integrity's Revenge- Battle of Charleston Harbor. The event was awesome and the workouts were wicked.
Zo finished 10th in the RX Men division(out of 41). In a division with names like Brandon Phillips, Travis Mayer, Irving Hernandez, Jason Ingham a top ten finish is big! He placed along side some of the best crossfitters in our region. Awesome.
Marty and our team of Brett and Scott both finished 2nd in their divisions. Over 230 athletes, and we crowded the podium in two divisions with our athletes. Our programming and dedication continues to prove itself.
Cayce destroyed the night WOD on the deck of the USS Yorktown. A first place finish among some of the Southeast Regions top women, and that was after an 8th place finish on the run. You read that correct, RUN.
Our athletes finished 1st in 5 events. ONE GYM...5 HUGE WINS (that's a big 'effin deal)
Alex and Steph worked hard and did well. We are all proud of them and the work they did. No doubt, they will be back for more too.
Speaking for me, Marty, Zo, and Jodi, it was great to have all the support at this event. We have spent a lot of weekends away in the Garage Games Series but the 20 or so folks that represented our gym this weekend made this the best yet. A cheering section that's almost as loud as the hometown gym helps a lot. Thanks for everyone who came down to support us and CFS.
More pictures will follow.

A salior, priest and veterinarian walk into a bar...
Our CFS family is quite unique. We could easily be the topic of a Action Figure Therapy episode or make up the cast of a novel that you couldn't buy until you turned 18. None the less, we somehow manage to forge hero cops, EMS gals that can out lift thier male counterparts in an emergency, teachers of the year, old men that heal faster than rehab says they should, priest, Marines, top high school athletes and some all around bada$$ soccer moms. (Quick side note: to all local bars/pubs/restaurants don't put pull up bars up if you don't want people doing pull ups). Mookie wanted us to pass this along as he says "goodbye for now."
To all the athletes, my friends, at CrossFit Spartanburg:
I want to start off by saying it has been a pleasure and a privilege getting to know all of you these past few years. I look forward to coming back on breaks from in between semesters. If someone would have told me 3 years ago that I would be headed to seminary to study to become a priest, I would have flat out told them they were nuts. So how did I get to the point where I am mere days away from climbing on board a puddle jumper and finding my way to the great plains in the middle of nowhere America to follow the not-so-silent call from God? Well outside of everything else (my family, job and Church) there was a little old gym that started off of Hearon Circle in 2009, not by coincidence, named Crossfit Spartanburg. Here, at this wide open dungeon of tears, sweat and crushed egos, I met Tal, Joel, Nate, Steve, Marty, Nicki, Glenn, Stoddard, Bess, Stephanie, Alex, Adam and…well you kinda know who all is in the lineup so if I left you out and you're mad go do some burpees, alleviate that anger and then commence with the reading haha. Through these people God talked to me so loud that it would make a Chinese gong feel like a wind-chime and in someways so quiet that it would make a whisper feel like your eardrums would bleed.
Looking back on these last couple of years my knowledge of myself has grown. It's not just knowing more ways I can defy gravity with a Turkish getup. I’ve learned how even the most mundane or random thing is neither mundane or random. They are actually the things that are used to smooth off the rough edges of our ego, ignorance and pride. It is much like how Our Blessed Lord spent 30 years doing manual labor, walking and hour to work, and then moving earth with His hands and primitive tools. This was to show us that there is something honorable, respectful and Holy in doing work that to us at the time seems boring, worthless or unimportant. But if we allow ourselves to fall into this fallacy then we miss the things that will make us better crossfitters, workers, spouses and all around better people. There is greatness in picking up the sledgehammer one more time, or doing the dishes tonight instead of letting them soak ‘til the morning or acknowledging and apologizing for your actions when you are in the wrong.
These are things that I have learned in the time since I’ve been at CrossFit Spartanburg. I didn’t come to the realization of these by some “AHA” moment, by myself or from the inside of a Tony Robbins self-help book (which isn’t self help at all if you are asking Tony for help, but I’ll let the good Doctor talk about that one on a later date on his wise blog posts). No I got the revelation from being around good people like those found on Tenosha Drive ,in the box that resembles and airplane hanger. It was with those same people who are waiting for the echo of ” 3,2,1…go” to be hollered so the next challenge can be realized. From my talking one-on-one with Tal on the beach between rounds of dominating corn-hole against Nate with my illegal alien teammate Alonso to sitting around after getting your hands worn down to the bone from wanting to get that extra pull-up rather than fall off the bar I have learned so much. By listening and challenging myself, that's why I’m headed to Nebraska and I have you all to thank for that.
If, by God’s grace, I am to finish seminary and one day become a priest of Jesus Christ in His Holy Catholic Church, that collar will be partially because of all of you at our “small, mundane, unimportant” gym off of some back road in a city people forget was named after valiant warriors of long ago. I will leave you with this from the Book of Sirach Chapter 37 (that's the Catholic Bible folks, not the redacted version)
You are all my friends and in my prayers, I love you all.
Mookie
Sirach 37
1 Every friend declares friendship,
but there are friends who are friends in name only.
2 Is it not a sorrow unto death
when your other self becomes your enemy?
3 “Alas, my companion! Why were you created
to fill the earth with deceit?”
4 A harmful friend will look to your table,
but in time of trouble he stands aloof.
5 A good friend will fight with you against the foe,
and against your enemies he will hold up your shield.
6 Do not forget your comrade during the battle,
and do not neglect him when you distribute your spoils.
7 Every counselor points out a way,
but some counsel ways of their own.
8 Watch out when one offers advice;
find out first of all what he wants.
For he also may be thinking of himself—
Why should the opportunity fall to him?
9 He may tell you how good your way will be,
and then stand by to see you impoverished.
10 Seek no advice from your father-in-law,
and from one who is envious of you, keep your intentions hidden.
11 Seek no advice from a woman about her rival,
from a coward about war,
from a merchant about business,
from a buyer about value,
from a miser about generosity,
from a cruel person about well-being,
from a worthless worker about his work,
from a seasonal laborer about the harvest,
from an idle slave about a great task—
pay no attention to any advice they give.
12 Instead, associate with a religious person,
who you know keeps the commandments;
Who is like-minded with yourself
and will grieve for you if you fall.
13 Then, too, heed your own heart’s counsel;
for there is nothing you can depend on more.
14 The heart can reveal your situation
better than seven sentinels on a tower.
15 Then with all this, pray to God
to make your steps firm in the true path.
